Knick Knack Quarterly

Concept for an independant magazine for Tickety-Boo, a children's toy shop in Norwich which specialise in upmarket wooden toys. Knick Knack Quarterly aims to document and showcase independent art, design and fashion directed at babies, toddlers, children and parents as well as articles, interviews, product guides and tips and tricks. The magazine's target market is parents who believe in a natural lifestyle and imaginative, engaging (and also non electric) products for their children.

I wanted the magazine to have a playful, bold and modern feel to it. I have achieved this through the clean but bright layout and colourful abstract shapes. The magazine is titled Knick Knack as it means toy or trinket, which ties in with the retailer I have chosen (toy shop) but also because it is a nonsense sounding word, much like Tickety-Boo. The word knick knack also comes from a children’s nursery rhyme; “Knick knack paddy whack, give a dog a bone...”

Knick Knack is printed on speckled eco paper which adds value to the magazine and makes it something the reader would want to keep and collect, and also gives it that natural, personal feel.
